So tell me, how many old pairs of headphones do you have? If you are anything like me, years of buying new headphones and getting them with smartphones have left you with an over abundance of headphones. So what do you do with old headphone? Let’s look at a few ideas to help you get rid of the old headphones once and for all.
Test Them First
Before you decide what you should do with the old headphones, make sure you test them first. The ones that don’t work, put them aside for now, we will talk about them later. The ones that do, clean them up and place them in a pile. Once you are ready, let’s look at a few options for you.
If you are an audiophile, chances are you have at least one or two pairs of headphones that are high end even though you aren’t using them anymore. You may be able to sell them on sites like Craigslist or even Facebook Marketplace. This will help you make a little of your money back and could even get you enough to get yourself a brand new pair.
Give Them to Friends/Family Members
I’m sure someone in your family or your circle of friends could use a pair of headphones. Let everyone know that you have some to give away by using Facebook, texts, whatever you need to do to get the word out. I’m sure someone will take at least some of them off your hands.
Donate the Headphones
If you can’t sell them or give them to your friends and family, why not donate them. There are many great places to donate things like headphones. Places like thrift stores, Goodwill, are great places to start. But even your local religious organizations may take them to donate to people who need them.
While this won’t work for every pair of headphones, in some cases it will, and it could save you money if something happens to your current favorite pair of headphones. Some headphones are modular, allowing you to remove cables, ear pieces, and more. If they are, try saving a few of the cables or whatever you think you might need. If your headphones start acting up, you will be glad you saved some of these parts.
Remember, headphones are electronics. That means you don’t ever want to just throw them away. It can be tough to recycle electronics, depending on where you live. But, many computer stores and electronic/furniture stores do offer places for you to drop off this type of material. When all else fails, you may have to look for government run dumps that will take the electronics and recycle them.
Remember, while you may not have a use for your old headphones, others might. Even if you can’t rehome them, never just throw them away. But, chances are, you should be able to find your headphones a new home where they can be enjoyed and used for years to come. What have you done with your old headphones?
